German Chancellor Angela Merkel (L) stands next to Afghan President Hamid Karzai as they pose for a family picture during the Afghanistan Conference on December 5, 2011, in Bonn, western Germany. The one-day gathering brings around 100 national delegations and aid organisations to the former German capital Bonn, 10 years after a meeting in the city put an interim Afghan government in place after the Taliban's ouster.
