A rumor that a man was killed over the Winter Olympic Games Opening Ceremony fireworks snafu made a
big splash across social media this weekend.
The story details the stabbing murder of T. Borris Avdeyev, the supposed technical specialist responsible for the failure of the fifth burst to turn into an Olympic ring.
The story as reported in The Daily Currant explains how Avdeyev was found dead in his hotel room from multiple stab wounds.
The tale includes “quotes” from a Canadian athlete and explains how Vladimir Putin was visibly upset with the fireworks ending; that it could have been too much for him to handle and he “may have been out for blood.”
But fortunately the rumors are false, according to International Digital Times .
The International Digital Times explains that The Daily Currant is a satirical internet news website that “repeatedly fools social media with its fake current events news stories.”
In fact The Daily Currant has its own disclaimer:

The Daily Currant is an English language online satirical newspaper that covers global politics, business, technology, entertainment, science, health and media. It is accessible from over 190 countries worldwide - now including South Sudan.
Our mission is to ridicule the timid ignorance which obstructs our progress, and promote intelligence - which presses forward.
The lesson? Check your sources before posting stories to your social media accounts, according to American Live Wire .
