An Egyptian mother beat her five-year-old daughter to death in the most populous Arab country for losing 50 Egyptian pounds (Dh26), newspapers reported on Sunday.
The woman, identified as Zakia, spent nearly three hours beating her daughter, Fatima, with a water pipe and sticks before strangling her at their home in Giza near Cairo.
Zakia had first claimed her daughter fell off the balcony but doctors told police she had been severely tortured before she was strangled.
Egyptian newspapers said Zakia’s husband later told police his wife killed his daughter after she lost 50 pounds.
